It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Basu Chatterji's movies are known for depicting middle-class lives of Indians effectively. This movie does the same.Based in Christian families of Mumbai of Tony and Nancy,it talks about their love relationship, the involvement of their families into it and marriage!!!Basu da's direction is flawless. The movie does not falter at any moment. It is highly engrossing and makes for repeated viewing. The music by Rajesh Roshan is beautiful. All the four songs are extra-ordinary and have been sung equally well. The cinematography, art direction, costumes, editing, etc are all good and add to the beauty of the story.Coming to the performances,Amol Palekar as always is exceptional. His look in the movie compliments his acting.Tina Munim is average. The supporting cast that consists of Pearl Padamsee,Piloo Wadia,Leela Mishra,Shobhini Singh,David,Ranjit Chowdhary,Deb Mukherjee,Uday Chandra,Arvind Deshpande, etc have all performed very well.Asrani in a special appearance and Tun Tun in an imaginary sequence leave a mark.On the overall, the movie is very good and makes for repeated viewing.

The story involves a young man and woman who travel by train to their office and fall in love. The unique thing about this film as with other Basu Chaterjee movies is it captures the life of the middle class very well.In this movie Basu Chaterjee captures the lifestyle of the middle class urban Christian community in India authentically. Like many of his films the city of Mumbai is an important character in the movie Technically it may not be very advanced but the story and the narrative is one of the finest. It is unfortunate that most people of my generation (I am born in 1980) have not seen this movie or even heard about it. The lack of knowledge about this movie among the young generation has prevented a good quality DVD of this movie hitting the market.I have given it 9 out of 10.

The 70s small budget Bollywood movies portraying normal family lives were among the all time great family movies. The prominent movie makers among them were Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Even today you find movies like "Golmaal", "Chupke Chupke", "Chotti si baat", "rajnigandha" running every other day on the movie channels. And you feel refreshed after watching one.Another such movie is "Baton Baton Mein". This movie depicts Christians of Bombay. Timeline is in the 70's. Bombay was beautiful. Tony Briganza (Amol Palekar) and Nancy Perreira (Tina Munim) with her uncle Tom(David) both catch the same local train to go to office from Bandra. And yes, the trains have sufficient space in them those days.Romance blossoms. And why not. Tony(Amol) has an attractive personality. Amol looked great in his French cut, a change from his trademark pencil thin moustache. They both have their share of problems. Nancy(Tina) has suffered a previously failed affair. Her mother Rossie(Pearl Padamsee) is a chatterbox who just can't wait to get her daughter married off to Tony, much to Tony's annoyance. Nancy's brother Sabhi is a guitar enthusiasist. And Nancy has a lover Henry(mazhar khan) who doesn't have the guts to tell her so.Tony's mother is a real tight lady. His father is understanding though. One day things get real bad when Nancy and Tony's families met at a cinema hall. Nancy's mother declares Tony as to be son-in-law. Tony's mother got real surprised as she wasn't knowing about Nancy. This caused a break up amongst them. Ultimately it took the sensible members, Tony's father and Nancy's uncle to patch up things and all were happy.

This film has a lovely story that isn't your run of the mile bollywood over dramatised romeo & juliet style love story. The film itself is simple and unfortunately it shows. The film looks cheap in places and the direction is not at its best in times. The soundtrack is fantastic with lovey classic numbers such as baaton baaton me pyar ho jayega!" After several afternoon meeting with the heroine and her ever loving family. The hero comes to grips with the fact that his new best friend is actually the girl for him. it all ends very happy happy.. A good effort that is not bad. all in all a good watchable film
